The Judging Operations Department of the AKC has asked for our input regarding two educational proposals under consideration.
Proposal #1 is prompted by the need of many new judges to have certain areas of their general dog knowledge strengthened. The proposal is to require attendance at a two-day basic course in dog show judging for all aspiring judges prior to their initial approval. This course would include such topics as AKC rules and regulations, judging guidelines, ethics, basic canine structure and movement, ring procedure, record keeping, weighing, measuring, etc. As the course is presently envisioned prospective judges who have satisfied the experience requirements would arrive on a Friday and depart on Sunday.
Results: yes 384, no 48
Proposal #2 is prompted by the need for approved judges to stay up to date with changes in the field of dog show judging. This proposal would require all approved judges to attend a 90-minute presentation once every three years. These presentations would include topics of a general nature such as rule changes, new policies, standard changes, revised or new forms, new procedures, etc. As the presentations are currently envisioned they would be presented by AKC Field representatives and made available in every region of the country. The programs would be offered to approved judges at no cost.
